WAYS TO FUND PROGRAM

Presently the US Government is paying for the housing and care of captive wild horses. They also pay for the adoption program and shipping wild horses to adoption sites. This is approximately $40 million per year.
The idea is to use these same monies to fund the sub-leasing of public lands back to the original leasees. These monies would be paid to participating ranchers and used for the administration of this program.
In addition, funds could be raised through herd adoption. Schools, groups and organizations could adopt a wild horse herd in a given area with the horses remaining in the wild.
Through donations and fund raising these groups would contribute to the overall fund. In return, these groups would receive updates about their herd from the organization and the ranchers involved. This involvement could be used as part of school programs to educate children.
A third possible way to raise funds would be to harvest young horses in a cyclic way (ie every three years) using humane round up methods such as feed baiting. This would also cull the herds should numbers exceed acceptable levels.
